BEAUTY:: WE CULTIVATE BEAUTY

Seven Mile Road is a people who value beauty. We want to cultivate and celebrate beauty. We are made in God’s image, and we have great capacity to create beauty and fill the world with His glory. We will cultivate beauty to fill our city with the beauty of God. This means we will champion diversity because color produces beauty. Musicians, creatives, artists, and artisans are valued because beauty matters.

As we start a new series in the Gospel of John, we wanted to explain the why behind the what of our series artwork and introduce to you the designer behind it.

MEDEA PEABODY

First meet — Medea Peabody. She is a freelance graphic designer in North Dallas. She describes herself as a stay-at-home mom who likes to scratch other surfaces of her brain. She love aesthetics and beautiful things. She’s a midwesterner by birth; a southerner by marriage; and a European at heart. She thoughtfully — and beautifully —designed our series with John 20:31 and 19:34 in mind.

John 20:31 — These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 19:34 —But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

BELIEVE AND LIVE

Our series through the Gospel of John is called — Believe and Live. Life is found as we believe in Jesus Christ. And as we believe in Jesus we are transformed to truly live. Water is in nearly every chapter in the Gospel of John. Water fills the vessel it’s in and it has the power to transform, cleanse, and heal. Water is present for baptizing, drinking, and washing. Jesus turns water into wine, walks on water, uses spit (water) and mud to heal, weeps, and even washes his disciples feet. Jesus says we must be born of water and spirit to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus says that he has living water to give us that will finally quench our thirst. And on the cross, after Jesus dies, his side is pierced and blood and water flow (John 19:34).

In this artwork, you see layers of transformation. The background gradient transforms from one color to the next. The  raw water image is a collection of pixels that create a wave texture. Together it has the appearance of a sunset on the ocean. The sunset climaxes in crimson which signifies the blood of Christ. The modern editorial font creates a contrast against the background and pointedly calls us to Believe and Live.
