TEXT: John 8:12-30
DOWNLOAD PDF VERSION
In this passage Jesus gives his second, “I am” statement- “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” As the religious leaders continue to question his identity and authority, Jesus shows us that we have good reason to believe His testimony. As we embrace him as the light, we must also beware of spiritual darkness that blinds us from the truth.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.
Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” What does he mean? What other “light passages” have we seen in John already that help us understand the meaning of the words of Jesus here?
How would you summarize the argument of the Pharisees against the claims of Jesus? (v.13) How does Jesus respond?
HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God.
What reasons does Jesus give for the Pharisees’ rejection of Him? (Hint: It’s not primarily a head issue but a heart issue)
What does it mean to die in your sins? How does Jesus’ warning here point us to the good news of the Gospel?
HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally).
Reflect on your story. In what ways has Jesus brought you out of the darkness into the light of life?
Note that this passage ends on a note of hopefulness: “Many believed in him.” How will you pray and work to see those around you believe in Jesus?
