Romans 12:17-21 // Overcome Evil with Good

TEXT - Romans 12:17-21

We close our study of Romans 12 with verses 17 through 21. Paul’s final notes on living a transformed life focus on how to respond to evil and to live at peace with others. Let us take all that we have learned through Romans 12 and being transformed by the renewing of our minds, present our bodies as living sacrifices, bearing the marks of a true Christian in a fallen world.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • What does “live peaceably with all” (v 18) mean? How does this compare to living in harmony with one another (v 16)?

  • Who are we supposed to pay evil for evil? In who’s sight are we to do what is honorable? With whom are we supposed to live peaceably? How do the answers to these questions enhance our understanding of Paul’s exhortations?

  • Where in the gospels are similar advice/encouragements given by Jesus and in other parts of the Bible (Paul’s letters)? Provide examples.

HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • How does reflecting on our true state, our true home, and the mercy and grace of God help us respond correctly to evil?

  • How did Jesus respond to his enemies and overcome evil with good?

HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • These verses command us to do what does not come naturally to us. How can we practically fight against the urge to retaliate and avenge?

  • What are some ways that you can overcome evil with good? In your home, at your workplace, in your neighborhood, in your city, etc?

  • Is there someone who you struggle to live peaceably with, as far as it depends on you? How can you work on this relationship? Do one of the things that you mention or think of this week.
