Racism is a deeply rooted belief that one race is superior to another. In Ephesians 2:11-22, Paul directly addresses this dividing wall of ethnic hostility and shows how the gospel reconciles us to God and one another. As God's people, we oppose racism, seek reconciliation with one another across ethnic divides and celebrate the beautiful diversity of God's kingdom, purchased by the precious blood of Jesus.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.
Christ achieved peace between Jews and Gentiles and so removed the source of their hostility with one another. What was the source of this hostility?
What does it mean for it to be abolished? In what sense are Jewish and Gentile believers “one new man”?
HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God
According to Ephesians 2, where do Christians find their ultimate identity? Why is this important as we consider the topic of racism and reconciliation?
Have you ever found yourself first identifying with your race or another divisional line (political, cultural or social) instead of in Christ? Why do you think we sometimes view our experiences and others through specific lenses instead of choosing to find our primary identity and perspective in Jesus?
HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally)
In what ways is God calling you to be an agent of reconciliation? Discuss two or three actionable steps that you can do as an ambassador of Christ to fight the sin of racism and promote healing across racial lines.
Do you struggle with the sin of racism? Do you struggle with a heart of unforgiveness towards those who have mistreated you? Be open and honest and confess your sin to the Lord and seek forgiveness.
Consider the 4 practical Next Steps from the end of the sermon. How can you do the following in light of God’s vision of ethnic reconciliation?
