TEXT - Genesis 28

God appears to Jacob and, in a vision, Jacob sees a ladder with angels ascending and descending: a link between heaven and earth. God is committed to continually be present with Jacob and keep his promises to him. This passage is a comfort to Christians and a signpost to the true and ultimate link between heaven and earth; Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • It’s been a while since we’ve been in Genesis. Take a moment to remind yourself of the events of Chapter 27. How does this context help us better understand Chapter 28?

  • As you read Genesis 28 what similarities do you see between God’s confirmation of his promises to Jacob and the same promises He made to Isaac and Abraham?

HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • How is Jacob’s dream of a ladder of angels ascending and descending meant to bring comfort to him?

  • Read verse 17 again. What does it mean for Jacob and for you to fear the Lord?

HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • This encounter with God came to Jacob during a time of loneliness and discouragement, in the aftermath of sin’s consequences. Describe a time when you have been in a similar situation. How did the Lord meet you? Comfort you?

  • Read John 1:51. Commenting on this passage, Andreas Kostenberger writes: “Jesus will be a greater way of access to God than the heavenly ladder on which angels traveled between God and Jacob (Gen. 28:12; cf. Heb. 10:19–20), and wherever Jesus is, that place will become the “New Bethel” where God is revealed.” How did Jesus accomplish this? How does this encourage you in your daily walk with him?
