1 Peter 3:8-22 // Encouragement for the Journey

In the gospel, God's people have been promised an incomprehensible inheritance, all by of the grace of God. This is the hope that is in us” (v. 15), through which we can quietly endure all things. What does this mean for us today? According to Peter, our calling now is to “honor Christ the Lord as holy” in our hearts, knowing that when our eternity is secured in Christ, all other concerns become slight in comparison.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • According to verses 9–12, why should we commit to being a people who bless others, especially when it is hard? How do our interactions within the church affect our witness outside the church?

  • Verse 15 is often used to justify a rational defense of the gospel that can at times lead to sharp and demeaning comments toward others. How do verses 14–17 challenge that approach, without invalidating the need for a rational defense?

HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • How does the imperative to “honor Christ the Lord as holy” affect the way in which we defend our faith to others, especially those who are hostile?

  • Read verse 18. How does this stir us to worship and gratitude? Why is it important that Jesus is first our savior before he is our example?

HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • Blessing transfers the favor we receive onto others. Repaying evil for evil, on the other hand, refuses to show favor and insists on keeping score. Can you think of ways this mentality has worked against unity in your relationships? What steps can you take to be more of a blessing?

  • Meditate on the question: How would your life, conduct and words be different if you really did not fear anything because you knew that the worst that can happen cannot happen—that you cannot lose God’s love for you?
