As the Preacher closes his book, he reminds us for the final time that all is vanity. He also summarizes his whole message as, “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” We have learned a great deal from the Preacher and his last words to us are ones that we would be wise to memorize and act on.
Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8 // Remember Your Creator
As we approach the end of our Ecclesiastes series, we read yet another call to rejoice from Solomon. Though we have seen this before, this exhortation is particularly directed toward those who are young. It's as if Solomon is saying, "Before it's too late, remember your creator. Only then will you live a truly joyful life." Whether young or old, imagine what your life would look like if it were marked by remembering and rejoicing in Christ!
Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 // Faith in the Face of Uncertainty
Ecclesiastes 9:13-10:20 // Lessons in Wisdom
In this passage, Solomon reflects on wisdom and folly. Writing in the form of Proverbs, he considers a number of ways that wisdom benefits us in life while pointing out how even a hint of foolishness brings ruin, overwhelming any good that has been achieved. How then should we live as Christians in pursuit of wisdom over folly in today's world?
Ecclesiastes 9:1-12 // Enjoy Your Life
You’re all going to die. You don’t know when. So live your life. That’s Ecclesiastes 9:1-12 in summary. These truths, though hard-hitting, are not meant to discourage us, but to give us a godly perspective on life and to be confident that all things are ‘in the hand of God.’ With the proper perspective of life and eternity, we can live joyously by faith as we journey through this world of vanity.
Ecclesiastes 8:1-17 // Walking Wisely Through A Foolish World
In this passage, the Preacher of Ecclesiastes shares more of what he has seen in his life: righteous men dying young and foolish men living long and prospering, the lengths that wisdom can take you and where it stops, and that we aren’t any better than our first parents, Adam and Eve. The problem of sin has plagued us all, including the Preacher, all but one, Jesus.
Ecclesiastes 7:15-29 // The Problem of Sin
In this passage, the Preacher of Ecclesiastes shares more of what he has seen in his life: righteous men dying young and foolish men living long and prospering, the lengths that wisdom can take you and where it stops, and that we aren’t any better than our first parents, Adam and Eve. The problem of sin has plagued us all, including the Preacher, all but one, Jesus.
Ecclesiastes 6:10-7:14 // The Good Life
In this passage, the Preacher of Ecclesiastes gives vivid descriptions of both wisdom and folly. The benefits of wise living are priceless, while a life of foolishness is easy to come by. The Preacher says that he has seen everything life has to offer. He has seen both good and evil, and the power that lies within wisdom. What does it mean to pursue a life of wisdom as we live under the sun?
Ecclesiastes 5:8-6:9 // Greed or Contentment?
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 // Going to The House of God
How do we approach the God of the universe? What should the attitude of our heart be in his presence? In this passage, the Preacher shows us the importance of understanding God's transcendence. He is the creator in heaven. We are his creatures on earth. Therefore, we must approach the Lord with a sense of reverence and awe. There is no place for vanity in the presence of God.
