On the last Sunday of every year, we spend time reflecting on the necessity of prayer from God’s word. We then put those truths into practice by praying together in the gathering. This year our scripture text is Philippians 4:1-7. 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year of anxiety and turmoil. Into this reality, God invites us to call out to Him in prayer and discover a true and lasting peace that is unknown to the world around us.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

HEAD:
Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.

  • Why is it so important to Paul that Euodia and Syntyche be reconciled? (v.2-3) What implications does this command have for the church today?

  • Paul repeats the command to rejoice (v.4). Why does he do this? Where else do we see the words “joy” and “rejoice” in Philippians?

HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God

  • What does the call to prayer in verse 6 tell us about the heart of Jesus for weak and anxious people like us?

  • How does the phrase “The peace of God” point us to the Gospel of Jesus Christ? (see Rom. 5:1, Col. 1:20)

  • What are you anxious about right now? What does this reveal about your relationship with God?

HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally)

  • Are there any ways you need to pursue reconciliation with fellows Christians? If so, how will you do this?

  • What are some practical ways you can cultivate a consistent prayer life?
