In week 2 of our Advent series, we look to Matthew 1 to examine Jesus as the Son of Joseph. Here we see God’s gentle care for Jesus his Son through godly parents — Joseph and Mary, and his sovereign power in inaugurating his redemption of us, his children. This Jesus, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, is Immanuel: God with us.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.
Matthew begins his gospel with a genealogy of Christ in verses 2-16. What is Matthew communicating about Jesus here? Why is this background information important?
Consider Joseph’s experience in verses 18-25. What are some truths he learned about Jesus?
Read verse 21 then read Genesis 3:15. What’s the connection between Eve and Mary?
HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God
When Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he naturally assumed that she had been unfaithful to him. How did he respond? What changed after the angel visited Joseph?
How does Joseph’s response (both before and after the angel’s visit) reveal his exemplary character, a heart for God, and mercy toward others?
Matthew quotes Isaiah 7:14 in verse 23- a prophecy of the coming savior given 700 years before the birth of Christ. What does this slow, long-term timeline of redemption teach us about God?
HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally)
Immanuel means “God with us.” What does this mean? How does it bring you hope and comfort in your darkest moments of sin and suffering?
Joseph exemplifies justice & kindness toward others (v.19). He also exemplifies faith & obedience to God (v.24). In what ways is God calling you to likewise love God and love others?
