In the third week of our Advent series, we look at Luke 1:26-38. The betrothed virgin Mary receives a shocking message from the Angel Gabriel: she will give birth to the Son of God. Even in the midst of inevitable confusion and understandable fear, Mary responds to this news of God’s gracious provision with faith: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."

  • How do Gabriel’s words to Mary reveal to us that God is doing something profoundly new and different in the birth of Jesus?

  • Why is the doctrine of the virgin conception essential to the gospel? (v.34-35)

HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God

  • How does Mary respond to Gabriel? What do these responses tell us about her heart for God?

  • Verse 32 describes Jesus as the eternal King. How is this description of Jesus good news for us today?

HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally)

  • In what ways do you need to submit to the eternal King Jesus today?
