In the third week of our Advent series, we look at Luke 1:26-38. The betrothed virgin Mary receives a shocking message from the Angel Gabriel: she will give birth to the Son of God. Even in the midst of inevitable confusion and understandable fear, Mary responds to this news of God’s gracious provision with faith: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
HEAD: Questions aimed at our minds to help us understand God’s word.
Consider the message of Gabriel (v.30-37). What does this message tell us about Mary? What does it tell us about Jesus?
How do Gabriel’s words to Mary reveal to us that God is doing something profoundly new and different in the birth of Jesus?
Why is the doctrine of the virgin conception essential to the gospel? (v.34-35)
HEART: Questions aimed at our affections to help us love God
How does Mary respond to Gabriel? What do these responses tell us about her heart for God?
Verse 32 describes Jesus as the eternal King. How is this description of Jesus good news for us today?
HANDS: Questions aimed at our hands to help us live for God (Personally, Communally, and Missionally)
In what ways do you need to submit to the eternal King Jesus today?
