TEXT: Genesis 12
This week we began Part 2 of our Genesis Series - Covenant & Longing (Chapters 12-36). As we pick up the story in Genesis 12 we see God’s invitation to Abram to become a source of blessing for all of humanity. As Abram answers the call, he abandons all of his regular sources of comfort and support, leaning wholly on God and his grace.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
HEAD: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.
It’s been a while since we’ve been in Genesis. Take a few minutes to re-cap. What key events took place in Genesis 1-11?
Genesis 12:1 begins, “Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’” What are the ways that God promises to bless Abram in Genesis 12:1-3?
Try to imagine yourself in the position of Abraham. Why would this call be difficult?
HEART: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD
How does Abram respond to God’s call? What does this reveal to us about his heart?
How does God confirm his promise to Abram in 12:4-9?
Abram shows great faith in response to God’s call. Then he shows faithlessness in v.10-20. What happens? How can you relate to Abram’s temptation?
HANDS: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)
God graciously and sovereignly intervenes for Abram and Sarai (v.17). How does God’s intervention point us to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Recount some of the ways you have experienced Christ’s faithfulness?
How do the truths of this story encourage you in your obedience to God? In what ways are you currently tempted to cling to other sources of comfort and support instead of trusting in God?
