Esther 2:1-18 // Hidden in Plain Sight

In Esther 2:1-18 we are introduced to two main characters, Mordecai and Esther. We see Esther rise from a position of obscurity to become queen of Persia. We continue to see the Lord’s sovereignty over all situations, even and especially in our fallen world.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

THINKING: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR MINDS TO HELP US UNDERSTAND GOD’S WORD.

  • After Vashti is cast out, how is the new queen chosen? Who ends up being the new queen?

  • Take a look at 2:6. How many times is it mentioned that Mordecai was “carried away”? What is the significance of this?

FEELING: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR AFFECTIONS TO HELP US LOVE GOD

  • It is mentioned that Esther “obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her” (v15). Does this remind you of anyone else in the Bible? (Hint: Genesis 39:4; 1 Samuel 2:26; 1 Samuel 16:21-22)

  • Where do you see hints of God working behind the scenes here? What does this tell us about who God is?

DOING: QUESTIONS AIMED AT OUR HANDS TO HELP US LIVE FOR GOD (PERSONALLY, COMMUNALLY, AND MISSIONALLY)

  • Esther was placed in the king’s palace and chosen as Queen. Where has God placed you and what role has he chosen for you? How are you/can you glorify him there?

  • We will soon see God’s purpose for Esther. What is God’s purpose for us?? (Ephesians 2:8-10; Philippians 2:12-13) How does this help you in your daily life?
